A WEEK OF LEARNING, FUN AND MUCH MORE…
In June 2003 fifty young women from throughout Texas joined us for our inaugural session of First Bytes: Summer Camp at the University of Texas at Austin, and they were introduced to the multi-faceted world of computer science.
There were lectures on bio-informatics, memory management and campers even took computers apart and put them back together. A working project that culminated in presentations to the parents saw the campers get hands-on with programming. From building robots to understanding string search theory, the campers tightly packed schedule afforded them a time and place to make friends, meet people and perhaps even make a decision about the field they will pursue a year or two down the line in college.
Supported by funding from the Texas Engineering and Technical Consortium, and in-kind support from Microsoft Research, Math Works, IBM, Instruments and other prominent players in the industry, campers got the best of both worlds – academia and industry. Top-rated lecturers that are a part of UT’s Computer Science department introduced key concepts and showed the teenagers how computers can affect and influence every part of our everyday life. At the other end, industry speakers, all of whom were women, interacted on a one-on-one basis with the campers to share their working life experiences.
