LabVIEW Project

Many thanks to National Instruments (http://www.ni.com/)  for their generous donation of LabVIEW software and screwdrivers to our 2004 participants, and to Sara Seba, Academic Marketing, Web Community and Student Programs, and Jacob Kornerup, Senior Software Engineer, for their outstanding support of our program.

With the outstanding leadership of  Mike Scott (http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/scottm/) and Phoebe Weidman (http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/phoebe/).  First Bytes participants spent the week learning how to program with National Instruments LabVIEW.  In the graphical programming environment of LabVIEW, it was easy to quickly assemble interesting solutions to real processes found in every-day life while still exploiting programming concepts.

The week’s labs required the First Bytes participants to apply many of the ideas and themes they were learning about all week.  The girls successfully completed labs on digital colors and created a color picker.  The explored image capture and simple maniuplation.  By the end of the week, they completed a chat room program.  As a result of these labs, the girls received hands-on experience programming, created and analyzed simple algorithms, discovered the importance of understanding hardware basics, and were able to experience the satisfaction of seeing the computer do what they “asked” it to do.
