Breakthroughs in Computer Science have enabled the globalization of the world economy. In the decades ahead, those sectors of the economy already leveraging these gains will see continued development and staggering productivity gains, other segments will be transformed, and undreamt of new segments will blossom.

These transformations are based on the convergence of almost unimaginable increases in low-cost computing power, the near universal digitalization of data and, critically, the knowledge of how to create software to solve complex information processing problems. Once an endeavor has been so transformed, it begins to ride the curve of exponential growth in capabilities dependent on innovation in Computer Science. That growth continually opens up new possibilities - new experiments, new insights, new paradigms, new connections, new business opportunities, new jobs. Research in Computer Science drives these advances in computing expertise.
