UT Transfer
The Department of Computer Sciences considers requests for transfers from other departments within UT-Austin. Applicants for transfer are expected to conform to the same entrance standards (including CS background) as applicants from outside of the University. The same application materials must be provided and the application deadline must be met, but the application procedure is slightly different.
Change of Graduate Major Application Instructions
You must submit two applications, one to the CS department and one to the Graduate School (GIAC). Carefully read the general information on applying to the CS department. The deadlines and admission criteria are the same for all applicants, whether or not they are currently at UT-Austin. The application procedure is similar; the only difference (described below) is in the form you must submit to the UT Graduate School (GIAC).
To the CS Department:
- Complete the online CS Department application. This form is critical:it enables the CS admission office to keep track of your application and all the supporting materials.
- Submit Statement of Purpose online with your CS Department application (You do not need to provide one to the GIAC office.)
- The three letters of reference should be submitted online by your recommenders
- You also will need to deliver or mail photocopies of all of your transcripts (except UT-Austin coursework) and test score reports to our office.
Optional materials: Our online system allows an applicant to submit a resume and up to three published papers less than 3 MB each.
Please contact our office if you have any questions.
To the Graduate School:
- Select the "Change of Graduate Major" application from The Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC) web site. It is downloadable, not electronic. Turn it in to the GIAC office.
- If an application fee is due, send it to GIAC online or by mail.
- Since you are a student at UT-Austin, your previous official transcripts and test scores are part of your permanent record. You should not need to request new ones to be sent.
- You may check if your GIAC application is complete at:
