03/03/2017 - Wanna go to Orange & Maroon Day? If you’re anything like me, you’re thinking that Orange & Maroon Day is some sort of rivalry day between UT and A&M where Longhorns and Aggies test their mettle against each other. Perhaps in a field day sort of extravaganza that maybe involves some football and a written test of intelligence, where the winning university gets bragging rights over the loser. Read more
02/23/2017 - One way to look at life is as a series of choices: good ones, bad ones, ambiguous ones, stupid ones. I’ve made tons of terrible ones (including the one to eat an obscene amount of jalapeno-flavored potato chips last night) but also smart ones. One of my smartest, bestest choices was to choose to major in computer science at the University of Texas at Austin. If you haven’t guessed it, today is the day I sing praises and wax poetic about UTCS. You should have seen it coming because as a graduating senior I am experiencing all kinds of extra-potent school pride and pre-nostalgia. Read more
12/06/2016 - Hello dear readers! Hope this week finds you well! So, with finals week finally upon us, I decided to compile a list of study tips that have helped me through the years and why they do so. Enjoy! 1) Switch out what subjects you're studying  Read more
11/27/2016 - Hello dear readers! I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving break! My own was very fun, but studying and homework still crept in at the edges, as it does. However, I did notice a very interesting and cool thing that happened when I was actually working this past week. Read more
11/22/2016 - As we rapidly approach finals week (*shudders in horror*), I've constantly been thinking about the amount of work I have to do and how much I have to study and all the extracurriculars I regularly have to commit to. In short, I, and I'm sure a lot of others, am drowning in stress. But more than that, I'm terrified at even the prospect of failure in the upcoming weeks, mostly because I've had to face the reality of it many times during this semester. So I've also been thinking a lot about how to adequately deal with failure. Read more
11/15/2016 - Hello dear reader! So, in light of recent political events, I guess I've been thinking a lot about our government, and specifically where we as computer scientists fit into it. In this age of ubiquitous technology, computer scientists should be in all areas and fields of study in society, because the expertise, experience, and perspective we would lend to any topic would be a unique and valuable one. However, the fact of the matter is, there is an extreme dearth of computer scientists in government, which is frankly, a tragic oversight. Read more
09/19/2016 - Programming is a language! I realize I may be late to this party, but I've only recently had this epiphany of just how true the phrase "programming language" is and I see now how much coding is just like being proficient in any other language.  Read more
09/13/2016 - I don't know much about computer science, at least, certainly not as much as the people who tell me all about their actual, paying jobs they hold building websites for clients or the myriad of hackathons they've participated in (and good on them). But also, good on the people who have never written a line of code in their lives and have decided to pursue a major in the field. Because that's brave, and we need more of those people at our college, and in the world. We need brand new perspectives and brand new approaches to real world problems. Read more
09/07/2016 - I moved to Texas from California when I was in the sixth grade. And when I say moved, I really mean dragged, kicking and screaming. It wasn't a fun time. For fear of death threats, I won't say I hated Texas, but I really didn't love it either. Whenever I tell people I'm from California, they without fail ask me which I like better, California or Texas. For years I, without fail, replied the former. It was the only life I had known, of course I was attached to it. I was convinced I wanted to go to college in California, too. Read more
04/29/2014 - My father received his MBA from Duke, and before that he graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology (India's MIT). My mother got her Ph.D. from Northwestern. My sister went to Princeton, UT Medical School, and started her residency in neuroscience at Penn last year. My friends in the Classes of 2010, 2011, and 2012 were going by the bucketload to schools like Harvard, Columbia, and Princeton. Read more
