What Oil Companies Want to Know: Inside Oilfield Data Inter
pretation
Talk Abstract:
One of my favorite Richard Hamming quote
s %93The purpose of
computing is insight not numbers %94 perfectly des
cribes
the goals underlying oilfield data interpretation systems.
Th
e oilfield is drowning in numbers%97terabytes of seismic
surface data an
d megabytes of borehole measurements%97but
fundamentally the question th
at oil company exploration
departments need to answer is simple: Where s
hould we drill?
This talk will begin with an introduction to oilfield da
ta
interpretation exploring the nature of data and information
that
influences exploration decision making. Next I will show
some examples
of data interpretation systems in use today.
Finally I will delve into
the interesting challenges for
computer science%97data volume fusion v
isualization and
management%97that these systems exemplify.
There
will be 5 questions for the audience following our talk.
Whoever answe
rs these questions correctly will be entered
into the drawing for a Nin
tendo WII console.
