Abstract: Like Ga
ul this talk is divided into three parts:
1)%09Classic guidance in visu
al search: I will give an introduction to the problem of visual search and
to the Guided Search model that my lab has been working on for a number of
years.
2)%09Guidance by scene properties: How do the rules of search cha
nge if we move from artificial search tasks to more realistic ones?
3)%0
9Finally in an effort to convince you that my particular intellectual obse
ssions are in fact a matter of life and death. Important applied search t
asks like airport baggage screening and routine mammography are characteriz
ed by very rare targets (low prevalence). Low prevalence causes problems in
the lab. If these are problems in the field this could really be a matter
of life and death.
