Talk Title: Warehouse-Scale Computers
Talk Abstr
act:
The popularity of Internet-based applications is bringing
incre
ased attention to server-side computing and in
particular to the desig
n of the large-scale computing
systems that support successful service-
based products.
In this talk I will cover some of the issues involved i
n
designing and programming this emerging class of large
(warehouse
-scale) computing systems. I will also discuss
what it means to achieve
energy efficiency in this space
and why that makes data-centers diffe
rent from laptops.
Speaker Bio:

pioneering work on computer architectures for commerc
ial
workloads. That work included the design of Piranha a
system b
ased on an aggressive chip-multiprocessing which
helped inspire many o
f the multi-core CPUs that are now in
the mainstream.
Luiz has a
Ph.D. degree in computer engineering from the
University of Southern C
