Talk Abstract:
Early in its corporate life Google made a number of

fairly unconventional choices about how to organize
its computers a

nd software infrastructure. These have
proved prescient and provided

a great deal of flexibility.
I''ll outline a number of these and comm

ent on what''s
been learned from them (including some observations

on large software projects in general).

Weinberger received his BS from Swarthmore
College Swarthmore PA wi

th his PhD in Mathematics
(number theory) at the University of Californ

ia Berkeley.
Since the middle of 2003 Dr. Weinberger has been at
Google New York working on various projects that handle
or store lar

ge amounts of data. Before that Dr. Weinberger
was at Renaissance Tech

nologies as Head of Technology.
He also worked in the Computer Science
Research center
at Bell Labs in New Jersey work on databases network
file
systems. He was Information Sciences Research Vice-President. <

br>Before that Dr. Weinberger taught mathematics at the University
of

Michigan in Ann Arbor. He is currently serving as a member
of various

groups which give technical advice to the government
CSTB ISPAB and

a Defense Science Board study on computing
plans for Livermore Los Ala

mos and Sandia.
