Talk Abstract: Ben McMahan, a software engineer on
the Google Instant team, will talk about a few technical challenges in dev
eloping and launching Google Instant Search. Google Instant is a new searc
h enhancement that shows results as you type. We are pushing the limits of
our technology and infrastructure to help you get better search results, f
aster. Our key technical insight was that people type slowly, but read qui
ckly, typically taking 300 milliseconds between keystrokes, but only 30 m
illiseconds (a tenth of the time!) to glance at another part of the page. T
his means that you can scan a results page while you type.
