Location: POB 2.402

Talk Audience: Faculty, Graduate Students, ECE and math faculty/graduate students

Host: David Zuckerman

Talk Abstract: This talk will discuss recent progress on code constructions for recovery from worst-case bit deletions.

The first part will consider the case of a large fraction of deletions, where we construct a family of binary codes of positive rate to recover from a fraction of deletions approaching 1/3. Previously, even non-constructively the largest deletion fraction known to be correctable with positive rate was around 0.17. For alphabet size k, we are able to correct a deletion fraction approaching (k-1)/(k+1), with (k-1)/k being a trivial upper limit. Whether a deletion fraction approaching 1/2 is correctable by binary codes remains a tantalizing open question. (Joint work with Boris Bukh.)

The second part will consider the other noise regime, of correcting from a small... Read more

Talk Abstract: Writing high-performance parallel implementations of graph algorithms is challenging.  Standard compiler parallelization techniques are usually inapplicable due to the irregular parallelism exhibited by these algorithms.  On the CPU, therefore, the standard strategy is to expose and exploit irregular parallelism using sophisticated runtime frameworks such as Galois.  Unfortunately, Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) make it difficult to use this strategy.

The GPU is an attractive target for graph algorithms because it supports massive parallel execution and features much higher memory bandwidth than the CPU. However, its programming model is also very restricted.  In particular, communication among threads is limited, so standard strategies for irregular programs (such as runtime... Read more

Talk Abstract: The human brain comprises about 100 billion neurons connected via 100 trillion synapses. In principle, the comprehensive mapping of an organism’s entire neural connectome should elucidate how brains function. However, relating biological functions to network structures hinges on uncovering behaviorally relevant patterns of neural activity, i.e. on understanding the neural code.

Here, we argue that the statistical regularity of neurals input controls whether a noisy integrate-and-fire neuron acts as a rate coder, with smooth... Read more

Talk Abstract: Many machine learning algorithms minimize a regularized risk. It is well known that stochastic optimization algorithms are both theoretically and practically well motivated for regularized risk minimization. Unfortunately, stochastic optimization is not easy to parallelize. In this talk, we take a radically new approach and show that working with the saddle-point problem that arises out of the Lagrangian makes the problem doubly separable and hence allows for a natural partitioning of the parameters across multiple processors. This allows us to derive a new parallel stochastic optimization... Read more

Talk Abstract: Recent progress in miniaturizing digital cameras and improving battery life has created a growing market for wearable cameras, exemplified by products such as GoPro and Google Glass. The imagery captured by these cameras is a unique video modality which implicitly encodes the attention, movement, and intentions of the user. The analysis of such video through First-Person Vision (FPV) provides new opportunities to model and analyze human behavior, create personalized records of visual experiences, and improve our understanding and...
