Mac Backup Instructions
Click the CS Dept. Backup icon on the right side of the Dock. A shell will open and prompt you for
your password. Enter your backup-server password. The software will then examine the files in your local home directory as well as those already on the backup server, and then transmit only those that are necessary. Depending on your network connection speed and the amount of files that have been updated since the last backup, this can take a long time. When the process completes, it will report a summary of the process as well as any errors.
To access the files, use the included SFTP client (Fugu) to connect to wopr.lecs.cs.utexas.edu. Once connected, navigate to ~/.lecs/laptopbackups/. From here you should be able to download any files stored on the backup server.
If you encounted a total disk failure and require a complete restore, email laptop-support@cs.utexas.edu and we will help you through it.
If you would like to install the backup software on a computer that does not have the supported image on it, you can download the software here.
Caveats:
- The process only backs up files that are in your home directory.
- Your local account name must match your CS UNIX account name.
- The backup process keeps the two most recent versions of any given file.
- The first time you run the backup process, you should do it from within the CS Department's network. If you do it from off-campus, the process may use a large amount of bandwidth and take a very long time.
