Amit Garg passed away April 5, 2003, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. A memorial service was held at 5:00 pm, Monday, April 14, 2003, in Avaya Auditorium, ACES 2.302. An informal remembrance followed in Taylor Hall 3.128.

About Amit

Amit began his UTCS graduate studies in 2000 as a Ph.D. student in our department. His supervising professor was Jayadev Misra. He received his B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India. Amit described himself as a "computer scientist with business skills and creative talent." "When I started my Ph.D., I saw in research a medium for creative expression. But more and more I desire that my work have impact beyond academia and contribute directly to industry and thereby to society. My Ph.D. research is a step in this direction - we are working to make distributed programming as straightforward as setting up an Excel spreadsheet. In the future I wish to undertake similar projects that represent a radical departure from the current way of doing things and at the same time have significant implications for social progress."

Endowed Fellowship: January 2007 Update

The Department of Computer Sciences is pleased to announce that the funding goal to create an endowed graduate student fellowship, entitled the Amit Garg Endowed Fellowship, has been reached. This endowment will be used to recruit and support a computer science graduate student each year.

Additional contributions to the fund for increased graduate student support may be made as outlined in the donation instructions below.

Endowed Fellowship: June 2005 Update

The Department of Computer Sciences is pleased to announce that the Amit Garg Endowed Fellowship has reached $25,000 which makes it an "Excellence Fund." Proceeds will be used next year to support conference travel for a CS graduate student.

We continue to work towards the $50,000 required for an Endowed Fellowship.

Endowed Fellowship: 2003

In the spirit of Amit's entrepreneurial enthusiasm, the Department of Computer Sciences and Amit's friends in the business, engineering, and student communities are working to set up an endowed fellowship in Amit's name. If we are able to reach our goal of $50,000 over the next five years, the interest from the endowment will be used to fund a CS graduate fellowship. The fellowship will be awarded every year and Amit's name will be remembered for as long as The University of Texas at Austin exists. This is a true honor and a fitting legacy of the eagerness with which Amit embraced life and the people around him.
