Professor John Werth Memorial Fund Established

The Department of Computer Sciences is pleased to announce that the John Werth Memorial Fund has reached the funding level necessary to create an Excellence Fund. The John Werth Memorial Excellence Fund will be used to provide support for travel by faculty and students to professional and academic conferences.

The funding goal is $50,000 to create an endowment fund. Additional contributions to the fund may be made as outlined below.

Donation Instructions

Online donation:

  1. You may make a donation online to the UTCS John Werth Memorial Excellence Fund through the University's secure giving page. Please read the instructions carefully before donating online to ensure that your gift is accounted for correctly. Any deviation from these instructions may result in your gift not being received.
  2. In text box #1 entitled "Please enter your gift designation(s)", the first two boxes should be pre-populated with "Natural Sciences, College of" and "Computer Sciences, Dept. of ". If pre-populated, please leave as is and do not select anything in the third and fourth drop down menu boxes. If the first two boxes are not pre-populated, please select "Natural Sciences, College of" in the first box and "Computer Sciences, Dept. of" in the second box. Again, do not select anything in the third and fourth drop down menu boxes.

Professor John Werth dies September 15, 2004

"It is with great sadness that I report that John Werth died peacefully at home on Wednesday, September 15, 2004, after a struggle with cancer. John's dedication to Computer Sciences education and research were rivalled only by his warmth and support of students and colleagues. His loss is felt keenly by his family and friends everywhere. We will miss him."

John St. Clair Werth Jr. died September 15th, 2004, at the age of 63. The cause was cancer. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Laurie Honour Werth of Austin, TX; and two sons, John St. Clair Werth III of Redmond, WA, and Matthew Honour Werth of Taipei, Taiwan, and their families. John Werth was born in Bluefield, WV, on Nov. 22nd, 1940, and grew up in Kingsport, TN. His undergraduate and master degrees in Mathematics were from Emory University in Atlanta, GA; he earned his doctorate in Mathematics at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. He recently retired from the Department of Computer Sciences at The University of Texas Austin where he taught and served as Associate Chair as well as previously acting as Associate Dean of the College of Natural Sciences. In addition to his university life, John enjoyed travel, literature, languages and music, as well as many outdoor activities, especially running, hiking and fishing. He had a keen sense of humor and was devoted to his family, as well as his many relatives and friends. The Department of Computer Sciences is establishing a commemorative scholarship in John's name. Donations may be sent to The University of Texas, Department of Computer Sciences, John Werth Memorial Fund. His family will provide a memorial bench along the Hike and Bike Trail around Town Lake - his favorite running trail.
