Freshman Admissions

We are very excited that you are considering The University of Texas at Austin's Computer Science program!

Deciding: Please consider visiting UT, and the Computer Science department to get a feel of our campus and community! The Office of Admissions coordinates UT Tours to show you the entire campus and all its resources. Our Computer Science Ambassadors offer a student-led tour of a day in the life of a CS student during the semester.

Applying: The Office of Admissions is responsible for the admission of undergraduate students to the University. Please visit the undergraduate admissions Web site, Be a Longhorn, for information on procedures and requirements. Future students may communicate with admissions counselors through the site about details concerning admission application status and decisions, campus visit event registration, academics, financial aid, and housing. For information on the Turing Scholars program and admissions, please visit the Turing Scholars website.

To apply for admission to the Department of Computer Science, select The College of Natural Sciences as a first-choice college and Computer Science as your first-choice major. When selecting a second-choice major, freshman applicants may choose from one of the many other majors offered at The University of Texas at Austin.

Getting ready: Freshman applicants seeking admission to the Department of Computer Science must meet the calculus readiness requirement to be prepared for the calculus courses in our degree plans. For more information, refer to the online resources about calculus readiness.

Also, please refer to the Department's guide for incoming students on CS readiness.

Transfer Students

Students from other colleges or universities seeking admission to the Department of Computer Science with 30 hours of transferable credit are classified as external transfer students.

Applying: Students who wish to transfer to UT and study Computer Science should apply for admission to UT as an Entry-level Computer Science major. Please view the process of being promoted from Entry-level to the CS major. For information on the Turing Scholars program and admissions, please visit the Turing Scholars website.

Getting ready: Once you are admitted to UT, our advisors will meet with you at transfer orientation to work with you to evaluate your transcript and to place you in the right UT CS classes when you arrive.

Keep in mind that the University imposes a residency requirement: In order to receive an undergraduate degree you must complete 60 hours in residence at UT Austin.

Transfer students from within the state of Texas may find the University's Automated Transfer Equivalency Database useful. It is a searchable database in which one may look up the UT equivalent for any college course offered within the state of Texas. You may also find useful the University’s list of transfer resources.
