The University of Texas at Austin

Promotion from Entry-level CS to the Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts Degree Programs

Computer Science Entry-level Courses are: CS 312, 313K, 314 and M 408D or M 408S or M 408L.

Most students complete these requirements within their first two or three semesters at UT. Students with substantial AP credit may be able to do so in one semester.

Students who are pursuing one of the standard CS degrees are divided at UT into three official majors:

  • Entry-level CS (for students who are taking their first several CS and math classes), and
  • CS-Bachelor of Science and CS-Bachleor of Arts (for students who have met entry-level requirements and have been promoted into the full CS major).

With the exception of students who are directly admitted to the Turing Scholars Honors Program, all students begin their pursuit of a CS degree as entry-level students.

Requirements for Promotion to Computer Science BS and BA Degree Programs

  • Complete at least three Entry-level courses in residence at UT.
  • Complete the Entry-level CS sequence (CS 312, CS 313K, CS 314 and M 408D or M 408S or M 408L,) with no grade lower than a C.
  • Achieve an Entry-level CS GPA of at least 2.50. The Entry-level CS GPA is computed over all Entry-level CS courses taken in residence.
  • Achieve an overall UT GPA of at least 2.0.

At the end of each fall, spring, and summer term the department will download information regarding who is eligible for promotion into the CS degree programs. Students that have sucessfully completed Entry-level will automatically be promoted to the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and notified by email. If a students desires the Bachelor of Art degree they will reply to the email requesting a change be made.

Students who are transferring to UT and who have completed more than two computer science classes may be directed to meet with the CS undergraduate faculty advisor for assistance with transfer assessment. For students who have completed all of the Entry-level CS courses out of residence, the CS Undergraduate Faculty Advisor will designate the next two computer science courses in the major to be used for the Entry-level CS GPA. If you are a student transferring from another university, click here for more information.

Should a student need to repeat a course in the Entry-level CS sequence (because he or she did not earn at least a C), the second attempt at the course will apply to the Entry-level CS GPA. However, all occurrences of the course will be used when calculating the overall UT GPA. Students will not be given permission to take an Entry-level course a third time.

Computer Science courses are restricted to CS majors only. Students not in the major, but who know they want to study CS, should go to WCH 1.106 and change their major to CS entry-level. Students wanting to add CS as a simultaneous major/degree will go to WCH 1.106 to add CS entry-level, as well.

Students interested in CS but undecided about changing their major are encourage to attend an Internal Transfer Session conducted by a CS advisor. You will be given current information regrading the major and an opportunity to ask the advisor questions.

Students without a CS major designation will not have access to CS courses.
