Computer Science Policies

Prerequisite Policy: The CS department checks and enforces ALL prerequisites for CS courses. For more information on requests for prerequisite waivers, contact the CS Advising Office.

Repeat Policy: Undergraduates may not enroll in any CS course more than once without written permission from an advisor. No student may enroll in any CS course more than twice unless there are nonacademic circumstances.

Fourth CS Course Policy: In general, students may take no more than three CS courses in a given semester. To apply for a waiver of this policy, fill out the 12 Hour Request Form and turn it in to the CS Advising Office. There are only two conditions under which a student may be eligible to take four CS courses in a single semester:

  • The student has completed CS336 and has a CS GPA of 3.0, or
  • The student lacks only 12 hours of upper-division CS courses and no more than 15 total hours to graduate.

Graduate Class Policy: Undergraduates may request permission to take a graduate course. The minimum requirements are an overall UT GPA of 3.0 and 60 hours of course credit. Information regarding taking graduate courses and reserving the courses for graduate credit can be found here. CS students may pick up the form to request to take a graduate course in the CS Undergraduate Advising Office.

Late Adds: Late adds occur from the 4th to the 12th class days of the Fall or Spring semester or on the 3rd or 4th class day during the summer. Late adds are only possible for sections that have open seats. Late adds require permission of the professor of the class. If you wish to late add a class, pick up a form in the CS Advising Office, get it signed by the professor, and return it to the Advising Office. Many professors will only sign these forms if you have been attending the class and keeping up with the material. So, if you are considering late adding a class, it is a good idea to start attending from the first class day.
