CS First-year Pod Program

What is a Pod?

The CS First-year Pods are a program for all incoming first-year CS students to build CS community and connect students to CS-specific resources. Each student will be placed in a Pod course with a small group of other first-year students. An experienced CS mentor and CS staff facilitator will lead the weekly 1-hour meetings on several topics from time management to how to turn in your CS homework. Each Pod will also have a social aspect planned by their mentor. There will be several events over the semester such as capture the flag tournaments, scavenger hunts, community service events, and group study sessions that you will have the opportunity to attend with your Pod-mates!

How do I join?

The CS advisors will register each first-year student, so you do not need to do anything additional to get involved. Once you pick your schedule during orientation, we will add you to a Pod that fits in your schedule! Every incoming CS freshman and transfer student will be added to a Pod. Don't worry! The class doesn't add any hours to your schedule and we don't assign homework, so you will have plenty of time to focus on your other classes!

Who are the Pod mentors?

The Pod mentors are exceptional leaders and students at UT! Most of them are Computer Science majors who have encountered many of the issues you may face your first year. Your mentors will contact you near the end of the summer to introduce themselves and to set up any activities or events they may have planned for the weeks before classes start. You will also have a CS advisor that will help to facilitate your Pod meeting. They are an experienced contact person if you have issues that you and your mentor need help solving.

Daniel Monroy

Name: Daniel Monroy
Year in college: Third Year
Hometown: Guatemala
Favorite CS experience so far: I've enjoyed being involved in various organizations within CS because they make you feel as a part of the community. Talking to the professors and learning from their background is also an enriching experience since it also lets me explore the field.

Jaime Rivera

Name: Jaime Rivera
Year in college: Sophomore
Hometown: Houston, TX
Favorite CS experience so far: If I had to pick my favorite computer science experience so far, I would say that it would have to be spending time with the cool people in the advising office. I go there practically every day, and I'm sure they're tired of me by now... But if it weren't for them, I wouldn't have the incredible opportunities I have now. They're awesome - you should definitely get to know them!

James Sweetman

Name: James Sweetman
Year in college: Sophomore
Hometown: Plano, Texas
Favorite CS experience so far & why: In my Freshman year I was part of the FRI program, joined the UTCS Roadshow, and I am currently in the DMI camp where I am learning about web design and development. So far, I would have to say my favorite experience is the camp that I'm currently in because I'm now being exposed to the tools I need to build websites. I've always been curious and interested in web development so this gave me the opportunity to uncover the inner-workings of a website. I encourage all of you guys to take as many opportunities as you can with CS so you can explore and find what you yourself enjoy the most.

Maria Belyaeva

Name: Maria Belyaeva
Year in college: Sophomore
Hometown: Houston, Texas
Favorite CS experience so far & why: My favorite thing about CS is that you can use it in many different fields. My friends all seem to be doing different kinds of things, yet they are all CS related.

Matthew Schneider

Name: Matthew Schneider
Year in college: Junior
Hometown: Austin, Texas
Favorite CS experience so far & why: Pancakes & Professors has been - without a doubt - the single most enjoyable event of my CS experience thus far. Not only were the warm, sweet delicacies a welcome reprieve from finals studies, but to be served by the very same professors whose exams were soon to be aced and returned made the experience thoroughly delightful and delectable. It's the little things that make UTCS such a great program.

Moises Holguin

Name: Moises Holguin
Year in college: 2nd-year
Hometown: Stockdale, TX (44 minutes south of San Antonio, TX)
Favorite CS experience so far & why: This summer, I have the great privilege of working full-time for UT as a Student Developer in the Information Security Office located at the FAC. I have been forced to learn new languages, deal with backends that I didn't even know existed, and have had to "step up to the plate." The learning curve is intense, but I love it! My favorite experience was so epic that it was Facebook-worthy! At the end of last month (May) I posted the following: "Today I experienced something for the first time. I felt the pressure of a project deadline quickly approaching. I felt the anxiety of watching my boss test my code. I felt the satisfaction of knowing that my code is actually useful and in production as we speak. For the first time, I feel that I am not just a CS major, but that I am a Software Developer that has made an impact... and I love this feeling."

Nada Ismail

Name: Nada Ismail
Year in college: Sophomore
Hometown: Houston, TX
Favorite CS experience so far & why: My involvement in Women in Computer Science (WiCS) has definitely been the most memorable CS Experience I have had. All the girls (and boys) in WiCS are friendly and are willing to help out a first year student with any questions they may have. I remember a couple of other students and myself laughing our hearts out at one of the WiCS meetings after we had described our personal experiences with some professors. Life becomes better when you share moments with other students who understand what you’re pursuing.

Nicholas Sundin

Name: Nicholas Sundin
Year in college: Sophomore
Hometown: El Paso, Texas
Favorite CS experience so far & why: I'm currently interning at Samsung R&D in North Austin. I have been introduced to the semiconductor industry and different types of teams that work on building chips. They've given me a badge, a named desk, free fruit, and an amazing group of people to interact with and learn from. The most exciting thing about the job is being able to move innovation by improving the set of tools available to researchers and at the same time learn from the researchers.

Peter Paul Wong

Name: Peter Paul Wong
Year in college: Junior
Hometown: Houston, TX
Favorite CS experience so far & why: A very tough question. For me, my favorite CS experiences have been being a part of an organization within the department and interning during the summer. As a member of ELA(Empowering Leadership Experience), I love brainstorming how CS can be extended beyond the classroom. While internships are great because you get a hands on feel for how your knowledge is put to the test in the "real world".

Rose Simmons

Name: Rose Simmons

Year in college: 2nd/sophomore

Hometown: Sugar Land, Texas

Favorite CS experience so far & why: I have enjoyed interning because you get real world experience and can try things that are very different from what you do in classes. Right now I work at a research lab and get to collaborate with people who have decades of experience in their field. My other internship this summer is all the way in Hong Kong so I'm definitely excited to do something that takes me out of my element.

 Stephen Cook

Name: Stephen Cook
Year in college: Senior
Hometown: Plano, TX
Favorite CS experience so far & why: Tutoring for CS courses! I do my part to leave the tips and tricks I learned over the years here for posterity. It's fun to teach and learn on a student-to-student level. No judgement, no intimidation, no misdirection. It's a great time!

Name: Tania Joakim
Year in college: Third year biology/prepharmacy student
Hometown: Dallas, TX
Favorite CS experience so far & why: I was a computer science First-year Interest Group (FIG) mentor last year and I loved it, so I'm really excited to be a Pod mentor this year!
