Description

Natural Language Processing deals with language data, such as English text and speech, and has important applications, such as processing the vast amount of information moving across the Internet. This course aims to give students an introduction to both theoretical and practical aspects of Natural Language (NL) systems through lectures and class projects. Previous class projects have included an Web-based Unix help system to answer English language questions and a text categorization system to sort text such as email messages by topic. This year the project will focus on system design and development of another NL system with practical application today. We will look at speech recognition as well as text understanding by investigating the speech recognition component of the ongoing Intelligent Wheelchair project in the CS department.
