CS329 Assignment 6

Due: Monday. 3/4/13

If you can't get ping to work it may be that the a firewall is blocking your packets. It's OK to just report the results you get in that case.

The Assignment

You will use several DNS and IP tools to complete the following exercise. There tools are available on the command line in Unix, Linux or Mac OSX. In Windows, you can run some of them using Cmd, but they are also available on the Internet. For example, you can visit network-tools.com or dnsstuff.com.
  1. Run ping on the web sites www.cnn.com, www.amazon.com, www.utexas.edu, wwww.txstate.edu. Get at least 4 results from each. Display them and explain why these might be different for a single website and between websites.

  2. Use dig or nslookup to determine the IP addresses of each of the four sites listed above.

  3. Use the IP information feature from http://www.dnsstuff.com/ to track down the city and country of this IP address: Next do a tracepath or traceroute to that IP address (or use the domain name). Include the city and country of origin of that IP address and indicate how many hops it took to get there.

  4. Use the WHOIS database to find out what you can about the website www.cli.com. Summarize what you discovered. You can use the WHOIS features in Firefox or from http://www.dnsstuff.com/. Explain what factors you used from the WHOIS database to find out about this organization.
Put all of your answers into an html document and post it onto your webspace. Call your file assignment6.html. Your HTML can be as fancy or as simple as you like. Send the URL to the TA. As usual, make sure that the page is world-readable.
