A Technical History of the ARPANET

Research contributions which can be attributed to the ARPANET

  • The ARPANET was the first large scale, wide area network.
  • It was likewise, the first widespread packet-switched network.
  • Much of the early knowledge concerning networking was a direct result of the ARPANET.
  • The ARPANET proved to the world that packet-switching and heterogeneous networks were not only possible, but quite feasible too.

In 1972, the ARPANET was shown off to the world at the International Conference on Computer Communication. After this event, networking grew in popularity and eventually the need to inter-connect networks caused TCP and ultimately TCP/IP to be developed, which allowed for the evolution of the Internet.
