EMAIL advice: 1) Read the conference web pages for SIGCOMM 96 and 97 (see SIGCOMM archives) 2) This file contains: a) some email snippets for SIGCOMM 93: b) some email info related to IETF c) some email info related to SIGCOMM 94 ----------------------------------- some email snippets for SIGCOMM 93: ( from 3/10/93 minutes) Local Arrangements - Anujan signed the cruise ship contract. The cruise and bus trip is from 6-9. He is working on the Internet access: talking to PAC Bell about connection and talking to Dec about workstations Number of seats was discussed: 4 or up is enough ( other comments "beware of too many seats") ( from 4/20/93 minutes ) 7. EMAIL: Anujan thinks that he will have DEC workstations, but if not, he can use some from his lab. He expects to get a hookup from PACbell but if not will use high speed modems from the dept. The dept has a technical person that he will use to install everything. ( from 8/12/93 minutes ) LOCAL ARRANGEMENTS *EMAIL: Anujan tried to get it set up for free, but it will end up costing us $1500 for the 56Kb line and the setup/Dec machines/ etc will be free ( except for a couple of complimentary regis- trations ). Anujan says that the DEC systems will be sent to UCSC early, so that the staff can ensure that everything is working ahead of time, and then the staff will be there all week. He is hoping to have up to 10 systems available . - ( 2 Alphas, 1 X, and the others are ascii terminals.... ) The connection will be via Barrnet. *MENUs: Pat is responsible for these and is going with basic coffee breaks right now. If Lixia/Imrich think that the numbers justify spending more, then he will add "continental breakfast" type foods to these. Tuesday night reception is finger foods and cash bar. CRUISE: Anujan says if anyone has some great "tapes", then bring them for the Hornblower cruise. Otherwise, we get what they have. *A/V: Anujan is using the hotel A/V so that we can get the best service. He has only received one special request from a paper author. *SIGNS: Anujan is providing signs. He will use some ACM stock that Pat is sending him. *Other: Anujan is functioning as the communication point for Kurose's TON lunch on Thurs. ( minutes 9/3/93 ) PLANS: Besides lots of registration and local arrangements work left, Sunday 12th will be spent setting up the email room and working out problems with registration. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ( the following mail message indicates some of the technical answers to how the email room was set up ) From varma@cse.ucsc.edu Fri Sep 24 13:22:40 1993 Hello Chris, I just got back from Minneapolis yesterday, just in time for the first week of the quarter. What a hectic two weeks! First of all, it was great fun working with you and others in the committee. I am glad I was able to contribute to the success of the conference. Thank you for the opportunity to do so. Here is the information you requested. I don't have the U.S. mail address for one person, I will try to get it. 1. Brad Smith, Facilities Manager with our department. He was basically responsible for setting up the machines at the conference. Two of his staff helped too, Paul Tatarsky and Duane Foote. It is adequate if you send a single letter to Brad. His address is the same as mine: Computer Engineering Department Applied Sciences Building University of California Santa Cruz, CA 95064 e-mail: brad@cse.ucsc.edu 2. Mark Wilson at DEC provided us the workstations on loan. His address is Mark R. Wilson Digital Equipment Corporation 455 Market Street, 7th Floor San Francisco, CA 94105 3. Paul Baer at BARRNet provided the routers and connection to BARRNet. All BARRNet services were donated to us, we are only paying for the Pac Bell line. Paul's e-mail is baer@barrnet.net. I don't have his U.S. mail address, but will try to get it. 4. The student volunteers were my PhD students Fred Bauer, Dimitrios Stiliadis and Lampros Kalampoukas. Fred is the person who helped you on Friday. I think it is adequate to send them e-mail, but if you need to use U.S. mail, the address is same as Brad's and mine. The e-mail addresses are fred@cse.ucsc.edu stiliadi@cse.ucsc.edu lampros@cse.ucsc.edu That's all for now. Got to go and fight some fires. I will let you know the address of Paul Baer when I get it. Thanks. Anujan ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- To: IETF-Announce: ; This message contains information about terminal room at the Dallas IETF in December so that attendees know what equipment it will have and what addresses will be in use (for the sake of firewall configuration). The terminal room will include approximately 64 Sun workstations as well as Ethernet (a mixture of twisted-pair, thinnet and AAUI) and LocalTalk plug-ins for people with laptops. (Instructions for getting IP addresses for laptops was already sent to this list -- send a message to ietf-ipregister@mci.ietf.org for more information.) The workstations will have 'ssh' installed on them. All of the workstations will be numbered out of the Class C-sized network 206.103.68.0. The plug-ins will be numbered out of 206.103.69.0 (and possibly 206.103.70.0 if we run out of addresses on the first). The terminal room will be in the Sierra room on the second floor of the Omni Hotel. It will open on Sunday, March 2nd at 12 Noon, and will remain open until Friday, March 8th at Noon. The room will be staffed from 7am to 7pm each day. It will consist of 45 Xterms and room for aproximately 40 laptops, plus three printers, two for paper and one for transparencies. The laptop drops will be 10BaseT Ethernet, plus LocalTalk for the PowerBook users. For those with ThinNet only, 10BaseT to ThinNet adapters will be available. Each drop will be labeled with a unique IP address, and dedicated addresses will be available at the meeting and via email at ietf-address@interop.net. All of the machines will be part of the ietf.interop.net domain, and will be within the 130.128 class B. The Xterms will be on 130.128.1.x and the laptops will be on 130.128.2.x. The machines serving the Xterms will have the usual complement of software, but if you have specific needs or requests, send mail to ietf-software@interop.net and we'll do the best we can to accomodate you. What's the official answer? Craig What's the deal with net access from SigComm? Can we plug in our own boxes? Who's running the terminal room? PCs are a problem as we have very few. There will be a number of SPARCstations awailable for remote access. Special accounts have been set up for the purpose. I will estimate around 20 will be available at peak hours. Soren What about people with their own laptops with Ethernet controllers (like me) who just want to plug in, get an IP address, and go from there? I could conceivably bring a PC to use as the mobile IP server... > What about people with their own laptops with Ethernet controllers (like > me) who just want to plug in, get an IP address, and go from there? > > I could conceivably bring a PC to use as the mobile IP server... I will discuss this setup with the network support here. Looks possible. We have done it before. The only problem is the question of numbers. Soren >What's the deal with net access from SigComm? Can we plug in our own >boxes? Who's running the terminal room? we will have 20 sun slc's with guest logins we may be able to accomadate small numbers of PCs with ether access. MAC access will depend on our central computing service, and may need a days notice.... jon
