1972

  • This year was devoted to the general design and planning of the project, as well as staffing it. A coordination team was set up in the Institut de Recherche d'Informatique et d'Automatique (IRIA). Participating host centers became active toward the end of this year.

1974

  • February - CIGALE Presentation:
A presentation featured a packet-switching network (CIGALE) with four hosts and three routers. It was operational for three hours a day, and this aided the testing of host software on the various sites.
  • June - Seven Nodes Operational:
Cigale had 7 nodes and was made operational for longer sessions. In addition, Cigale was made available to users who wanted to run tests or experiments.
  • July - Four Concentrators were installed
Connections established with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in London.
  • August - Inter-network Connection:
Connections established with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in London.

1975

  • February - Financial Challenges:
Cigale shrank to 3 nodes due to financial constraints. Four concentrators were equipped with host interfaces. This facility increased the total number of host interfaces available in the network. This compensated for the reduction in the number of nodes. It also enabled the attachment of some hosts to two different ports. At this point, Cigale was able to deliver packets to the same destination through several ports in order to improve reliability.
  • July - New Services:
Services available on three of the hosts at this time were: time-sharing, remote-batch, file transfer, and a facility allowing a terminal attached to a local host to establish a connection to a remote host.
  • October - ESA Connection:
Connected to the European Space Agency (ESA) in Rome..

  • More Connections:
Connections established with the European Informatics Network (EIN).

  • Continuous Operation:
From early in 1976 until 198?, Cigale was continuously available. Out of 20 host computers, six offered services on a regular basis.
