Dean's Scholars Council Election Rules
- The council will select a week for the elections. Dean's Scholars who will not graduate before the start of the next long session are eligible to vote once each.
- The election will be run by all present council members who are ineligible to vote (referred to later as election officials).
- Students who wish to run should submit a brief statement describing their qualifications and why they think they would make a good council member. Statements will be posted on the World Wide Web prior to the elections. All statements must be received by an election official (or other appointee of the council) before 8 AM on the Sunday directly before the elections.
- Ballots will be drawn up with a list of all candidates. At least one election official must be present at every seminar during the election week to conduct the election.
- Students can vote for as many as ten candidates. Ballots with more than ten candidates chosen will be ignored. Students may vote for fewer than ten candidates.
- Election results will be tallied by the election officials. The ten candidates with the most votes will then become the non-first year part of the council for the next year.
- In the event that the tenth and eleventh place candidate are tied, a runoff will be held. All candidates with the same number of votes as the tenth place candidate will participate. Students are allowed to vote for as many candidates as there are unfilled seats on the new council. Otherwise, the election will proceed just as the general election.
- After the 10 new members of the council have been chosen, the new and old councils will meet once. At this meeting, a chairperson of the new council will be chosen by the 10 members of the new council. The new council formally takes office at this meeting.
- The 3 first-year students for the new council will be chosen by the freshmen class on the day of the fifth Thursday of the semester, or the soonest day after this in which both classes meet as a group. This election should be carried out in the same way, with the election official(s) appointed by the council.
- If, for some reason, a member of the new council resigns his or her position before the freshman election, the director of the program may choose to fill the vacancy with the person with the next highest number of votes in the election. Otherwise, any resigned positions will not be filled unless council mandates an election to fill such positions.
