The College of Natural Sciences
will sponsor its Fourth Annual Undergraduate Research
Poster Session on Friday, April 26, 1996 in
the Ground Floor Hallway of Welch. This will be an opportunity
for College undergraduate students conducting research under the
supervision of University faculty and staff to present their work
publicly. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is Monday,
April 15, 1996 at 5:00 PM.
A booklet containing abstracts will be available
at the session. There is no registration fee. The required format
for abstracts and suggestions for poster presentations is given
below.
1. Submission of Abstracts.
Contributed abstracts must be submitted by
students enrolled in the College of Natural Sciences. The work
must be the result of a one semester minimum , research project.
The abstract must receive official sponsorship by a University
of Texas faculty or research staff member. Each abstract must
be signed by the student and the supervisor.
2. Where To Send Abstracts.
Send original and two copies to the College of Natural Sciences,
WCH 204, 12500. Please indicate Poster Session on envelope.
3. Firm Deadlines.
Abstracts must be received by 5:00 PM, Monday, April
15, 1996.
4. Abstract Format. Enclosed
is an example of the format required for all abstract submissions.

5. Size.
The abstract must fit into a rectangle that measures 4.0 in. wide
by 3.0 in. long. This space must include the title of the abstract,
the authors' name and affiliations, and all footnotes and references.
Photographs. No photographs can be included in the abstract.
6. Style.
Boldface the title. Type each author's name in capital letters.
Italicize or underline the author's affiliation. Place a dash
between the affiliations and the beginning of the text of the
abstract. Please skip one line between the text of the abstract
and any footnotes and references that would appear in the text.
Use 12 pt. font for body of abstract. Authors are encouraged to
examine abstracts in journals in their discipline.
7. Internet.
Abstracts will also be available under the UT Austin Homepage.

8. Computers and Equipment. Electrical outlets are available near some of the tables in the hallway in Welch. We will attempt to honor requests for poster placement to provide access.
9. Poster Placement. If
your poster is part of a group and should be displayed as such,
please request this at the time of submission.
Poster Information and Advice
The space available for each poster will be 3 ft. wide by 4 ft. high. You should have a banner in large type that includes title, authors and affiliation. The poster should be displayed for the full three hours of the session. One of the authors should be available at the poster for at least two hours. Type and figure sizes should be appropriate for communication with groups of people gathered around the poster board. The poster should be self-contained, i.e., understandable without additional comments. Questions may be directed to Alan Cline (1-9717) or members of the College Honors Committee.

Students are encouraged to examine abstracts in proceedings and journals in their research areas for examples of good and bad abstracts. If the work was supported by some agency, then some acknowledgment may be appropriate at the end of the abstract. You are permitted to include references at the end of the abstract.
