Dean's Scholars Council Elections 2000 - 2001

In 1997 the Dean's Scholars Students Association was started and a Council was established to help plan and coordinate all DS activities. The 13 Council members meet weekly to plan and coordinate activties and discuss possible new activities to enhance the program.

If you are interested in running for one of 10 positions on the DS Council for the academic year 2000-2001, please write a statement stating why you think you would be a valuable member on the Council. Email this to Arundathi Shenoy- no later than APRIL 20, Thursday.

Elections will be held in seminars during the week April 24-28.

Please email Arun or any of the current Council members if you have questions about what this involves.

I hope you will consider this opportunity to get involved in the program. As a council member for the past 3 years, i can say that it's been a rewarding and fun experience and we have definitly expanded the program in terms of student involvement and variety of program activties. As a council member, you could be actively involved in shaping the future of the Dean's Scholars Program. (message from current council chair Arundathi Shenoy)

Why? Because I'd love to. DS has been so great this entire year and I'd love to get further involved. Sure, I've done lots of DS activities like Middle School Enrichment, trips, IM sports (leading scorer for DS men's soccer team, hah!) and I've enjoyed every bit of it; especially getting to know the people. But I would really enjoy working on Council not only to continue the traditions that we all know and love, but, also, to make sure that Dean's Scholars is as positive an experience for the incoming DS'ers as it has been for me.

PS. I can handle the responsibility; I'm an officer in Women In Science where I've organized free lunches and I helped coordinate a soccer tournament this semester.

Philippe de Rouffignac

When voting for people on council one should probably take into account the experience and enthusiasm a candidate possesses for that council position. I've been on council for the last 3 semesters, and I've enjoyed every minute of it. I participate or help with almost every DS activity that goes on during the year, and I make those nifty fact sheets for the Port A, McDonald Observatory, and Enchanted Rock trips among other things. My senior year is going to compose of taking about 12 hours of classes in total, so I'm going to need to devote a lot of time to something. Please vote for me. Thanks Philippe

Why I would be a valuable member of the DS Council....

Everyday I'm amazed by the caliber of people we have in this program and the opportunities we're given because of our involvement. I have come to realize just how lucky I am to be a part of this group and how positively my college career is being shaped because of it. I simply want to become more involved in the everyday workings of DS as well as working towards any improvements that should be made in the future. So I'd say the one quality I have that I think would be applicable to the DS council is a great deal of enthusiasm for continuing and building on the success we enjoy so far. If chosen as a representative I promise to simply and diligently work as hard as I can for DS.

Why I want to be a Dean's Scholar Officer:
My first reason has to do with a story my principal told my graduating class at graduation: He had a friend in high school who was first pick for quarterback his sophomore year, but he was diagnosed with cancer before he could start playing. He eventually had to have one arm amputated, but the next year, when he was back in school full time, he decided to try track and field and he picked, of all things, pole vaulting as the event he most wanted to do. Well, that year he broke the school record for the highest jump and won district. When my principal asked him how he had done it, the boy told him that what he had lost in one arm had very to little to do with his strength in the other. Now, I don't know anything about pole vaulting, (with one arm or two) but I do know about pursuing what I want and doing the best I can to succeed, and I want to be an officer because this group of people is absolutely amazing to me. Secondly, I love to create new activities for a group to try, (I have a list now, too,) and I like to see plans that are followed through; nothing compares to making people happy.
That sums it up. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Why I you should vote for me for council:

  • I don't make lame jokes.
  • I have done stuff:
MSEP, tutoring, Austin Science Fun Day, friday lunches, speaker help, trips, sports, etc.
  • I want to do more stuff:
more sports and especially more outreach programs (in particular, working with local junior high and high schools to show kids how cool a natural science degree is)
  • I have the selfish desire to try to make a difference in a real cool program that has made a difference in my life (Dean's Scholars)
  • I work hard.
  • I would really like to be a D.S. council member.
  • I would be a good D.S. council member.
  • I don't make lame jokes.
    :)

For those of you overwhelmed by the overqualifications of everyone running (I know I am)--let me make it interesting by nominating myself... =)

This has been my first year in DS and I must say that I have enjoyed being a part of this program. However, I have not been as involved as I would like to be--oh sure I've done the fun stuff, but now I would like to actually extend my involvement to the organization and improvement of Dean's Scholars. I know that I can work with the other council members to keep DS running smoothly, and to expand the impact of the program. And if you are looking for enthusiasm (or perkiness) =P in your council members, I've got it to spare. If given the opportunity, I know that I could continue the good work already done by the current members. Thank you for your consideration. Now forgive me for what I am about to do, but i couldn't resist!--I've got the skill and the will...all I need is the chance (how's that for a cheesy slogan!) Okay now I'm done. =)

I believe that any endeavour that I choose to become involved in deserves as much attention as I can possibly devote to it. My active involvement as a current DS Council member, Plan II Peer Mentor, and one of your four newly elected Student Government Natural Sciences Representatives reflects social and leadership skills needed to motivate others. I possess a strong commitment to those I represent and always try to get things done for them as long as they ask. Oh, by the way, I'm working on getting a coffee shop in Welch (thanks for the suggestion Kris and Shirley) through Student Government...if bribery works at all...hee hee :)

Dean's Scholars has done so much for me: opened doors to countless opportunities, introduced me to so many fields of science and research, helped me develop friendships with so many people with whom I share common bonds. I want to give back to both old and new Dean's Scholars what they have done for me. I view this closely-knit group as a model organization for the university and community and want to help expand this status. This past year, I've been involved in MSSEP, elementary school tutoring, and many other DS functions. I've also served as an officer in Women in Science (WISDOM Student Representative). You can check out the website I designed at www.esb.utexas.edu/wisdom. Some ideas I had for DS next year are making a scrapbook or photo album, designating someone as Historian/Reporter (in charge of publicity with local newspapers and taking pictures), and mainly encouraging more involvement from all DS members. I'm responsible, trustworthy, and willing to listen to all your ideas. I promise to devote my time to DS and would really appreciate your vote. Thanks.

Adrian Lu

Hi my name is Adrian Lu
I've never eaten my neighbor's poo.

I love Dean's scholars cuz it's lots of fun,
Especially Jess and Jason's Annie Get Your Gun..

I promise to work hard and make every meeting,
You'll get the runs from those strawberries you're eating.

I'm telling you now, I won't jack around,
I sat on the pot and lost a whole pound!

So pretty pretty please vote for me,
This poem is so lame cuz I've gotta pee!

Pooja Paranjpe

In comparison to previous years, I sincerely feel that this year's Dean's Scholars have been more active than ever before. The number of activities with which DSSA itself is involved has also increased. As those who know me best would agree, I love to organize, so organizing those activities has been enjoyable for me. I've had the privilege of serving on Council for the past two years, and I would appreciate the opportunity to do so again.

Aditya Paul

I've been involved in DS for the past two years. I have participated in several of the events, in various capacities, including the trips, lectures, socials, middle school enrichment, and of course, the seminars. I believe the opportunities and experiences the organization offers are valuable to students of a variety of interests, not necessarily just scientific. I would like to be involved in continuing and improving these various aspects of the program. I also think that DS is valuable in fostering relationships and providing personal attention to students that may otherwise feel overwhelmed and, perhaps, even neglected, academically speaking, owing to the sheer size of the college. With respect to this, it seems that these relationships help students explore their interests more thoroughly and realize paths best-suited for them. I really like this aspect of the program and feel that I can be positively involved in maintaining and improving such qualities of program.

Stacia Rodenbusch

My name is Stacia Rodenbusch, and I would like a seat on DS council so that I can be involved in all of the planning for fun and exciting DS events!! I have gone on many trips with DSers and I feel that I am prepared to do some of the background work to keep these programs running smoothly. I have a strong sense of responsibility and good organizational skills. If elected, I will contribute to all the worthwhile extra-curricular activities of DS like elementary tutoring, IM sports, and the Upper-Division Lecture Series. Thank you for you support :)

Jerry Sun

Hi everybody,
My name is Jerry Sun. If I am voted into council, I will try to my best to keep up the good work which this year's council has done. I have participated in the food preparations of both trips this year, in MSEP, in Austin Science Fun Day, and many other dean's scholars activities. I promise to keep dean's scholars the best honors program at this university.

Kyle Wedin

I have been very involved with Dean's Scholars over the past few years and am experienced with the current workings of the program. One of the basic means that the council has of influencing the direction we go in is not only by directing the programs and events that we do, but also in getting the other members involved. I think you'll see that this year's council has done at least a better job than before, and is consistently improving. And that's what I see as the council's main goal for the next year. Over the three years that the council has existed, it has grown from the two or three people who handled everything DS did to a true group that acts only to direct, not to monopolize, the DS events. By now, we've been able to get the numerous events handled in an orderly fashion; our new goal is to make sure that the rest of DS is involved. And, of course, next year is the culmination of DS intramural sports. I hope to work with everyone next year as I have the past few years.

Jason Yong

I gots nothing but love for the dean's scholahs program. Peep this, I've tried day in day out to be involved in the program, and I feel that I can do this best by serving on the council again. My enthusiasm and dedication to DS are ... true ... true.

Brandon Zinn

"Why should I vote for that really cool guy Brandon?"
1. I'm everything you want in a council member.
2. I'M ALL ABOUT DS IM SPORTS. I can't emphasize this enough.
We WILL win a championship in something someday, and I will not rest until we do, or at least until we get a girl quarterback.
3. I'm a math major, and math majors are good at council stuff according to the Central Limit Theorem Corollary.
4. I'm everything you need in a council member.
5. I organize almost every DS extracurricular event imaginable, I love to gossip, and I'm really perky. (oh wait, that's Pooja)
6. Because a lot of you tried to throw me in the ocean at Port Aransas and you owe me.
7. If you care about extracurriculars, I go to most of the Friday lunches, I head an MSEP group, I work in the DS office, I'm on council currently, I worked to get the DS T-shirts made for only $5 (a few still left), and I try my best with IM sports, so I usually have the "4-1-1" on DS goings-on.
8. I'm everything inside of a council member that you wish you could be.
