David Patterson vs. Katie : )
I am in my third year as a graduate student in computer science at the University of Texas at Austin. I am pursuing a Ph.D. in computer science under advisor Kathryn S. McKinley and co-advisor Doug Burger.

I am interested in how to do computation, including the entire stack from programming languages down to the microarchitecture. My expertise is in compilers and the hardware/software interface, but I am also very interested in programming languages and microarchitecture.

It has become clear that the methods we once used to improve performance (deeper pipelines, smaller devices, and faster clock speeds/more ILP as a result) will no longer work. Frequency scaling is declining, power consumption has become critical, future processors will have to exploit more concurrency to improve performance, and reliability will come to the forefront as technology continues to scale. With the entire computational stack already in flux as PL experts and microarchitects alike are forced to take on these new challenges, this is great time to re-think how we go about doing computation.

When I'm not at school, I enjoy playing soccer, running, dancing, and playing racquetball. I'd like to become good at swimming and biking as well so that I can do a triathlon someday. I have played the flute since elementary school, and I still enjoy doing so every now and then.
