This book is a direct follow up to Short Victorious War , and deals with the repurcussions of Pavel Young's cowardice in the action at Hancock. Most of the foreshadowning of the previous book comes to pass here, and as a result the tone of the book is more somber. The fate of Denver Summervale from Basilisk Station is also resolved.
