Guidelines

The primary goal of the combination disc image/backup solution is disaster recovery. In a situation where a hardware or software failure requires all software to be reloaded from scratch, proper planning can make recovery quick and easy. The recovery procedure is:

1. Email laptop-support@cs.utexas.edu to inform us of the problem and set up a time to have your hard drive reimaged.
2. Connect to the backup server to restore home directory.
3. Reinstall your personal applications that are not included in the image.

Keeping these things in mind will make recovering from disaster easier:

• Be mindful of what you keep in your home directory. The more data that you back up, the longer it will take to restore from backup in an emergency.
• Keep installation media for any applications you've installed on your computer. Restoring from a backup will not reinstall your applications.
