• Some songs by original artists copied rather directly (in my opinion) by Santana (I'm a fan of Santana, but geez):

  • This one, "She's Not There" by The Zombies, seems to me not as close to Santana's version as in the cases above; but in my opinion, Santana doesn't add much to the original, unlike this 2004 performance by Vanilla Fudge.
    (Aside: Here's how the Vanilla Fudge looked and sounded back in the 60s -- not such a different sound -- and the video is complete with go-go dancers!)
    Here's a version by some guy on American Idol that in my opinion, adds nothing but is really pretty good.
  • Compare Santana's version of "Evil Ways" (here's a version I found on youtube) to a version from Willie Bobo, who wrote that song. (I can't put a date on the latter though, so I wonder if it incorporated ideas from Santana -- help welcome on this.)
• Above is a link to a Zombies song copied by another. The Zombies included Rod Argent, who later was the lead singer for the group Argent. Compare Argent's original version of the song "Liar" with Three Dog Night's copy. Sounds to me like a pretty direct copy!
