Lecture 03: Wireless Networks

January 25, 2002

Preparation:

In this lecture we will move up the stack to the network layer. We will learn a basic knowledgement of wireleass PAN/LAN/WAN as a subnetwork technology, and see how an IP layer can be constructed on top on them. As we have discussed before, mobility management can take place in the Internet layer (like Mobile-IP), and it can also take place in the subnetwork layer. In this lecture we will focus on how to handle mobility within a subnetwork.

You should read the following papers before going to class. When you read these papers, keep the above two issues in mind, i.e., interactions between IP and wireless PAN/LAN/WAN, and mobility management in this layer. The first paper is only an overview and should be fairly easy to read. The rest are more technical, but you can skip much of the "EE" details. One way to finish them fast is to form a small study group and read them together.
