William Jarrold

Current Position

Since September, 2005 I have been working as a computer scientist at SRI International serving as the ontologist for the CALO Platform team. CALO (Cognitive Agent that Learns and Organizes) is a DARPA funded program to develop robust personal assistant.

Prior Position

From December 2004 through August 2005, I was a post-doctoral research fellow in the department of computer sciences at the University of Texas at Austin working as a member of the MFKB Group headed by Bruce Porter. My role was to support the ontology needs of CALO.

Research Interests

Ontology, knowledge representation and reasoning, evaluation of knowledge based systems.

Bio

After receiving my B.S. degree in Cognitive and Brain Sciences from MIT I moved to Austin Texas to work on Cyc, an ambitious and controversial AI project which aims to encode elementary common sense in a rule-based system. I worked as an ontologist and programmer on Cyc for 10 years, first at MCC and then at Cycorp. I enrolled in graduate school and completed my PhD in Educational Psychology at UT Austin in August 2004. My course of study was cross disciplinary as it involved issues in knowledge representation and reasoning as well as neuropsychology and psychological assessment.

Other Research

I have some ongoing work aiming to extend my dissertation which involved emprical validation of knowledge based content, theory of mind, and emotion. See Open Heart Logic and (soon) participate in our web based experiment.
