2003 Speakers and Content Lecturers

Dr. Vagdevi Meurnier led the First Bytes participants through a team building exercise entitled, “What Kind of Animal Are You?”

On Sunday, June 22nd from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. Dr. Mary Eberlein from the Department of Computer Sciences discussed “Codes and Ciphers.” (pdf doc)

Dr. J Strother Moore, Admiral B.R. Inman Centennial Chair in Computing Theory and chair of the Department of Computer Sciences, welcomed the First Bytes participants (pdf doc) and gave a lecture on “String Theory and Its Use in Computer Science.”

On Monday, June 23rd from 10:30 – 12:00 p.m., Professor Kathryn S. McKinley, Ph.D., lecture on “Memory Management.” (PowerPoint document)

image of girls playing mastermind Dr. Catherine Stacy and Dr. Roger Priebe introduced the Fundamentals of Logic and its importance in the study of computer science through the week through a daily game sessions of Mastermind and SET.

Doug Burger led an interactive discussion on “How to Build a Computer.” Basic electronic concepts such as power, ground, resistor and voltage regulators were introduced.

On June 24, Austin Research Lab and Pervasive Lab was First Bytes’ host. Dr. Ann Marie Maynard, Director of Austin Center for Advanced Studies, discussed her life as a computer scientist followed by a tour of the fascinating Pervasive Technologies Lab.

In a session designed to encourage participants to think about any activities or career that was not impacted by a computer, Dr. Elaine Rich invited questions about where computers and computer science could be used.

Dr. Mia Markey demonstrated the socially relevant field of bio-informatics through her lecture, “Computer-Aided Diagnosis.” (Power Point document)

Several computer science professors gave mini-computer science lectures coupled with live demonstrations. The campers visited two robotics labs led by Dr. Ben Kuipers and Dr. Peter Stone, toured the visualization lab with Shashank Khandelwal and the computer architecture lab led by Dr. Doug Burger.

“10 Things I Wish I had Learned” was led by Donna Van Fleet, an internationally experienced high-tech executive who was vice president of development from IBM at the time of her retirement.

A field trip to National Instruments included building a robot, meeting with women from different NI departments, including databases, programming and Management Information Systems, and visiting the NI manufacturing plant. This program was organized by CS alumna and NI employee Stephanie Rowland and NI employee, Sara Seba.

“Tool-Time: A Computer Dissection” was led by Lisa Kaczmarczyk, a PhD student and camp coordinator.

The history of computer science was presented through a showing of Flare Films, Inc. “To Dream Tomorrow: A Portrait of Ada Lovelace.” The film was introduced by Dr. Chris C. Edmondson-Yurkanan
