Much contemporary art contemplates the nature of the man-machine interface, the role of technology in society, and the boundary between our inner and outer selves. The visual arts exhibit Cheese is “an experiment in the architecture of sincerity” developed by Christian Moeller in collaboration with the UCSD MPLab and Caltech: Please see Christian Moeller’s website for a more detailed description of this work.
Real-time facial expression recognition
One of the results of the work on face detection and tracking has been real-time facial expression recognition. Being able to understand faces and infer emotional states is critical for next generation interactive robots or online learning systems, and has wide applications (e.g., psychology, psychiatry, and security). See the CERT webpage for more information on our facial expression recognition projects. Here we show how a virtual avatar can be controlled by facial expressions. In this video, Josh Susskind is controlling a 3D character designed to interact with children in a reading tutor program.
