Jacob Schrum's Page for Fall 2007

I'm starting my second year of graduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin. I'm a Ph.D. student in the Department of Computer Sciences. I received my B.S. from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, where I majored in Computer Science, Math and German.

I am currently doing research under Risto Miikkulainen of the Neural Networks Research Group on the application of neuroevolution to board games, specifically Othello/Reversi. I'm currently preparing entries for the CEC 2007 Othello Competition. In my experiments, I'm using the Enforced Sub-Populations neuroevolution algorithm originally designed by Faustino Gomez. I've also started researching ways to drive evolution via human interaction, particularly in the domain of games. By interacting directly with an evolving population, a human agent's actions in an artificial world can serve as a fitness function. This can lead to games where the opponents tailor themselves to the human player, making the game more fun. This work makes use of the simulation environment BREVE.

I am also a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and am the webmaster for the Student Chapter's Website here at UT.

I am currently a TA for Introduction to Computing, taught by Mike Scott.
