Announcements
7/26: First class day is on August 25th.
7/26: Though a bit disruptive, the class will be
taught by a substitue for the second week of
classes so that I can attend a conference
(CIG2011)
in South Korea. The substitute is
Mary Eberlein,
who has taught this course several times before, so you'll
be in good hands.
8/22: The Discussion Section for unique id 52190 has been moved
from NOA to BUR 112.
8/24: The TA for the course is Si Si.
Also, there is no Discussion Section on 8/25.
9/6: Extra credit announcement: Rubik's Cube. The amount of extra
credit available for this is equivalent to one quiz grade. To
earn it, you must visit me during my office hours, with enough
time to spare for you to solve the cube. If you use instructions,
you must solve the cube in under 15 minutes. If you do not use
instructions, then I will give you 25 minutes. You can only get
the credit once, but I'll let you try again if you fail to
solve the cube in the time limit. Also, note that the schedule
has been changed from week 3 onward.
9/14: Time of Final Exam added to schedule: 12/13, 9:00am-12:00pm.
Location still pending.
9/21: On the Monday before the midterm, 9/26, I will be holding office hours
from 1:00pm-2:00pm and 3:15pm-4:00pm.
10/11: Extra credit announcement: Nim. You all need to know how to play Nim
for the Nim tournament on 10/20,
but I will also be offering the following extra credit: Visit me in
office hours and beat me in 2 out of 3 Nim games. The games will be set
up so that you can win if you use perfect play, but because I will be using
perfect play, I will win if you mess up. I will cover it in class, but the
strategy for perfect play in Nim is discussed on its Wikipedia page.
The amount of extra credit available is equivalent to one homework grade.
10/27: On the Monday before the midterm, 10/31, I will be holding office hours
from 12:00pm-2:00pm.
11/3: Several small adjustments have been made to the schedule. We will be going at
a slower pace and covering fewer topics. Also, HW6 is now available.
11/6: Grades for the second midterm are up. Because many people performed poorly,
I am offering this extra credit assignment. This
particular extra credit assignment is worth up to 22 points which will be added
directly to your midterm grade. The assignment is due at the beginning of class
on 11/15. Because you are given time to work on this outside of class, it will
be graded harshly: you should take time to make sure your proofs are perfect in
every way. In fact, you should probably write the proofs out on scratch paper
before writing up the final version. You are not allowed to work in study groups or
to share any parts of your answers with other students, but you can come to me and Si Si
for help. Lastly, be aware that it is NOT possible to
earn over 100% credit on the midterm by doing this extra credit. The points earned
on the extra credit will be added to your raw point score on the midterm. The midterm
originally had 81 possible points, but the highest score earned was 72. Therefore,
midterm grades will be adjusted so that a score of 72 is equivalent to 100%, and once
the extra credit has been added, any score over 72 will be reduced to simply 72.
11/7: The location for the final will be PHR 2.110,
from 9:00am-12:00pm on 12/13.
11/17: There will be no office hours after class on 11/22. Instead, I will be having office hours on Monday, 11/21
from 1:00pm-3:00pm to help students with last minute questions on HW6.
11/29: My Thursday office hour on Dec. 1st is cancelled. Instead, I will be available from 1pm to 2:30pm on the next
day, Friday, Dec. 2nd.
12/4: I will not be holding office hours at my regular times this week. Instead, I will be at my desk on
Wednesday, Dec. 7th, from 2pm-4pm, and on Friday, Dec. 9th from 1pm-3pm.
12/5: Study sessions for the final will be held in PAI 3.14. The first on
Dec. 8, 12p-3p, and the second on Dec. 9, 3p-5p.
You can see it all on the calendar for PAI 3.14
