I am a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Computer Science, University of Texa at Austin under the supervision of Prof. Aloysius K. Mok and Prof. Simon S. Lam. I am collaborating with the Human Centered Robotics Laboratory led by Prof. Luis Sentis in the University of Texas at Austin to build a semi-autonomous robotic system known as a cyberphysical avatar; I am also working with the Mechanical Systems Control Laboratory led by Prof. Masayoshi Tomizuka in the University of California, Berkeley to build an intelligent networked mobile gait rehabilitation system.
I received my Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Univerity of Texas at Austin in December 2012 under the supervision of Prof. Aloysius K. Mok. My Ph.D. work focused on designing adaptive reliable and real-time wireless communication platform and corresponding network management and data management techniques for supporting emerging Cyber-Physical Systems. I was the sole recipient of the James C. Browne Graduate Fellowship in 2010 and the recipient of the Microelectronics and Computer Development Fellowship from 2006 to 2009.
I received my Master of Philosophy degree in Computer Science from City University of Hong Kong in 2006, advised by Prof. Kam-yiu Lam and Prof. Edward Chan. I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Nanjing University in 2003 with the excellent graduate award.

Cyberphysical Avatar: In this project, we are working with the Human Centered Robotics Lab led by Prof. Luis Sentis and the Neural Networks Research Group led by Prof. Risto Miikkulainen in the University of Texas at Austin to build a semi-autonomous robotic system named Cyberphysical Avatar. Cyberphysical Avatar is designed to be able to adjust to unstructured environments and perform physical tasks subject to critical timing constraints while under human supervision. It integrates recent advance in three technologies:
By combining the efforts from an inter-disciplinary research team of computer scientists, mechanical engineers and machine learning researchers, we have made substantial progress towards building a fully operational cyberphysical avatar. A technical report on the cyberphysical avatar architecture is available here and a simple demo is available here.

Network-based Mobile Gait Rehabilitation System: In this project, we are working with the Mechanical Systems Control Lab led by Prof. Masayoshi Tomizuka in University of California, Berkeley to build a networked mobile assistive system to transform outpatient rehabilitation from a closed environment at a hospital or rehabilitation center to an open, home or community environment.
We deployed a wireless body sensor network on the patient side by integrating heterogeneous medical sensors and actuators (including air pressure sensors and inertial sensors) on our low-power and real-time wireless communication platform. Real-time sensor data collected from patients will help remote physical therapist to make high-level decision and provide dynamic and appropriate training plans for the patients.
Our preliminary result is available here. We are performing clinical testing in UCSF medical school to validate our system design and evaluate the performance of the designed control algorithms in real hospital environment.

WirelessHART: Low-Power Reliable and Real-Time Wireless Sensing and Control Network: In
this project, we work with the Future Architecture Department led by Mark Nixon in Emerson Process Management to design and develop the WirelessHART real-time communication platform, which is the first open wireless communication standard for industrial wireless real-time sensing and control applications. Our achievements include:

Data Management in Distributed and Dynamic Real-Time Sensing and Control Systems: In this project, collaborating with Prof. Krithi Ramamritham, Prof. Sang H. Son and Prof. Kam-yiu Lam, we studied the problem how to maintain sensor data freshness while maximizing control quality in real-time sensing and control systems especially in presence of dynamic workload in distributed systems. Based on different task models, we designed novel and efficient scheduling algorithms, presented thorough theoretical analysis on their schedulability, and did extensive experiments to validate their correctness and effectiveness. Our results are:
