Supreeth Shastri

Hello! I'm a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin hosted by Prof. Vijay Chidambaram. My research focuses on the analysis, design, and development of experimental system software. In 2018, I graduated with a PhD from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, advised by Profs. David Irwin and Prashant Shenoy. Previously, I got dual MS degrees from the Columbia University working with Prof. Henning Schulzrinne, and spent eight years building software systems at Cisco, Philips Research, NEC Labs, ARM, Ittiam, Infosys, and Raman Research Institute. I love reading books, playing tennis, and together with my infinitely patient wife, I cherish parenting our lovely 10-year old boy, Sam.

I explore how design and operation of computer systems are influenced by external disciplines such as law and economics, and build system software to manage their impact. You can find an overview of my work here.

CS + Law: My postdoctoral research investigates the impact of digital privacy regulations, like GDPR and CCPA, on computing systems. My work, in collaboration with UT Law, has identified GDPR anti-patterns in modern system design, demonstrated how to build GDPR-compliant storage systems, and currently developing the first ever GDPR-specific benchmark. More here.

CS + Economics: The core theme of my doctoral research is managing risk in cloud computing markets. While cloud platforms sell computing for a price, they expose applications to a number of implicit risks by precisely defining and controlling the service-level characteristics of cloud servers. My research aims to identify these risks, quantify their costs, and explicitly manage them for cloud applications. Towards that goal, I adopt and extend concepts from finance and economics to propose a new system design approach called financializing cloud computing . By treating cloud resources as investments and by quantifying the cost of their risks, financialization enables system software to manage the risk-reward trade-offs, explicitly and autonomously.
