Also see beautiful fiction which concerns itself with much the same questions. Existentialists concern themselves heavily with the purpose of life, the quality of their mood and so on; while analytical philosophers try to describe experience analytically - with a theory. Rationalists such as Plato tend to theorize without feeling adequate urge to test their falsifiable hypotheses; whereas empiricists like Socrates focus heavily on challenging theories with experimentation (eg: by the socratic dialogue).

Fiction:

Purpose:

As to purpose, a novel can be written for the purpose of taking a reader to another world or strange circumstances - as in science fiction or fantasy. Or it can build and introduce us to extraordinary characters. Or it can be a way of examining - and perhaps criticising - (the section of) a society and its values. Some may even preach, by embedding morals in their stories. Or, style may be its main gift - the plot may itself be weak, but the it may be delectable for its vividness or for its mastery over the language. Or the purpose of a novel may be a combination of these.

Style and types:

Short stories:

These works often do not afford a lot of space to explore and understand a character. In limited space, they try to bring out an aspect of the character and his situation. In order to deliver entertainment to the readers, they often include surprising twists at the climax. Eg: O Henry.

Novels:

Writers who subscribe to realism do their best to bring out the characters' traits - precisely and clearly - trying hard to not let their own personality and judgements interfere. They explore and develop the character by placing them in various situations.

Writing a good realist novel may be an ardous task: writers struggle to find just the right words to precisely describe the situation and scene, to describe the trait or behaviour they want to bring to our attention. They may face the problem of having to deal with a long period of time within a few pages.
