Talk Abstract: Smart mobile devices have been pervasive in our life. It has been forecasted that the number of smart mobile devices could reach 10 billions globally by the year of 2018. Along with the explosive increase in the use of mobile devices, there is also rapid growth of the mobile data traffic. More importantly, the cellular networks that support these devices and their applications are extremely complex and are also changing at a rapid pace. The rapid evolution of networks, mobile devices and mobile applications, the complex interactions between them, and their large scale and heterogeneity makes management of service quality in this complex ecosystem challenging. Traditional network operations have focused on managing the links and elements that comprise the network. There is no doubt that this focus on network element operation is foundational. However, it is by no means sufficient to assure adequate end-to-end performance that customers experience. In this talk, I will give a glimpse into the challenges service providers face when managing service quality in today’s cellular networks and the research and innovations that have been created to effectively address these challenges in order to improve the users’ smartphone experiences.
Speaker Bio: Jia Wang received her MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science from Cornell University in May 1999 and January 2001, respectively. She has been working at AT&T Labs - Research since then.
