John Werth Memorial Fund established

John's dedication to Computer Sciences education and research were rivalled only by his warmth and support of students and colleagues. His loss is felt keenly by his family and friends everywhere. John St. Clair Werth Jr. died September 15th, 2004, at the age of 63. The cause was cancer. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Laurie Honour Werth of Austin, TX; and two sons, John St. Clair Werth III of Redmond, WA, and Matthew Honour Werth of Taipei, Taiwan, and their families. John Werth was born in Bluefield, WV, on Nov. 22nd, 1940, and grew up in Kingsport, TN. His undergraduate and master degrees in Mathematics were from Emory University in Atlanta, GA; he earned his doctorate in Mathematics at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. He recently retired from the Department of Computer Sciences at The University of Texas Austin where he taught and served as Associate Chair as well as previously acting as Associate Dean of the College of Natural Sciences. In addition to his university life, John enjoyed travel, literature, languages and music, as well as many outdoor activities, especially running, hiking and fishing. He had a keen sense of humor and was devoted to his family, as well as his many relatives and friends. The Department of Computer Sciences is establishing a commemorative scholarship in John's name. Donations may be sent to The University of Texas, Department of Computer Sciences, John Werth Memorial Fund. His family will provide a memorial bench along the Hike and Bike Trail around Town Lake - his favorite running trail.
