09/01/2021 - According to UTCS Professor Dana Moshkovitz, randomized algorithms are sometimes faster than the best known deterministic algorithms—this is known to be true in the field of computer science. But her research group’s work proves that they can be quadratically faster, under plausible complexity assumptions. Under complexity assumptions, the upper bound on this is tight and problems exist for which randomization gives a quadratic speedup. Read more

11/28/2011 - UTCS graduate Ken Calvert was elected to IEEE Fellow "for contributions to internet topology and active networks." Ken earned his Ph.D. from UTCS in 1991 under Simon Lam's supervision. Currently, Ken is Professor and Chair of the Computer Science Department at the University of Kentucky. Read more
05/18/2004 - Professor Simon Lam receives the 2004 ACM SIGCOMM Award The annual ACM SIGCOMM Award recognizes lifetime contribution to the field of communication networks. Professor Lam will accept the award at the 2004 ACM SIGCOMM conference in Portland, Oregon, on August 31, 2004. As the 2004 award recipient, he will deliver the conference's keynote address.
