09/29/2023 - Simon Lam, a UT Austin professor emeritus of computer science, has been inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame for his pioneering contributions to the security of internet applications. In 1991, he invented secure sockets. His work was then funded by a grant from the NSA University Research Program from June 1991 to June 1993. Lam and three graduate students implemented the first secure sockets layer in 1993, named Secure Network Programming (SNP). Read more

Honorees and speakers were Dr. Alan Cline, who has been accepted into the Academy of Distinguished Teachers at UT Austin and Dr. Simon Lam, winner of the 2004 Software System Award from the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Browne won the University Co-op Career Research Excellence Award for maintaining a superior research program in such fields as performance measurement and analysis, operating systems, and software engineering. 05/18/2004 - Professor Simon Lam receives the 2004 ACM SIGCOMM Award The annual ACM SIGCOMM Award recognizes lifetime contribution to the field of communication networks. Professor Lam will accept the award at the 2004 ACM SIGCOMM conference in Portland, Oregon, on August 31, 2004. As the 2004 award recipient, he will deliver the conference's keynote address.
