Project Summary

Next-generation distributed applications will involve storing, transporting, and processing multiple types of information, such as textual and numeric data, images, audio, video, and animation. Due to inherent differences in data characteristics (e.g., size, format, tolerance to errors, real-time requirements), these applications impose diverse performance requirements on the underlying file systems. The main objective of this project is to design, implement and evaluate file systems that can efficiently support these emerging applications. To achieve this objective, we have developed: (1) application-specific policies that can align the service provided by the file system with application requirements, and (2) mechanisms that enable their coexistence in a file system. Symphony is a prototype file system that instantiates our research findings.
