Motivation for using AMR

• Spacing of the grid determines the accuracy and the cost of the computation.
• “Difficult” regions (due to discontinuities, shocks, steep gradients, etc.) need fine grid spacing.
• Uniformly fine meshes are computationally costly and in some cases the optimum spacing cannot be determined a priori.
