Things To Do To Get Started

• Get a CS Unix Account
  If you already have an account in the MicroLab you do not need to apply for a new account. Your existing account will be transferred to the Unix system. Your old username and password should work on the Unix machines. If you do not have an account in the MicroLab then you should apply for a new CS Unix Account.
• Public CS Unix Machines
  Public CS Unix machines are in the basement of ENS and Taylor Hall. The basement is open 24 hours. Have your UT ID with you if there is a spot check. You can work on a CS Unix machine from the console in the basement of ENS. Here is a list of public CS Machines.
• Software for Remote Login
  If you want to work from home you can log in remotely to any one of the public CS machines listed above. You can download a utility software like SSH Secure Shell or Putty that will allow you to communicate with the CS machine securely. You can get the software for free from bevoware. You may also want to download a FTP software that will allow you to transfer files to and from your home machine to the CS machine.
• Learn Unix
  You need to learn a few commands in Unix to get you started. You will be given a handout in class. Here is an online Unix Resource that you will find useful. Also you can get a tutorial introduction to Unix.
• Learn a Text Editor
  There are several text editors available on a Unix system - vi, pico, emacs. You will be given a handout on vi. Here is an online VI Tutorial.
• Home Directory on z server
  You will be working on the z server. There should be a home directory created for you. When you log into any CS machine you should change directory to:

       cd /u/z/users/cs327e/username
       

  Each user has a file in their /u/z/users/cs327e/username directory called .zinfo that contains their login information, and is restricted to be readable only by that user. For example:

  # ls -l /u/z/users/cs327e/kona/.zinfo
  -r-------- 1 kona under 61 2012-03-20 22:13 /u/z/users/cs327e/kona/.zinfo
       

  Inside that file is their username, password, and the name of their database.
