The Basics: Starting your UTCS Webpage

Introduction

Web development is a fantastic tool to merge your creative side with your technology side. With blank files like .html, .js, .php and .css.. the possibilities can be endless. Although PHP and JavaScript are on the more complex side of web development, it is important to start with the basics and really get your hands dirty with HTML5 and CSS first.

Here are some great links to get you started with basic knowledge:

  • Step #1 - UTCS Account Setup

This is a quite important step. Make sure that you have a UTCS account setup. If you do not have one already, you can request an account here from the UTCS Department. For your account, you should have a username and a password. That username will be the way that you access the website. For example, my webpage link is cs.utexas.edu/~omeed, meaning that what you see after the squiggly line is my UTCS username. Keep your password safe. In a time sharing operating system like UNIX, it is incredibly important to keep your password safe to ensure the privacy of your data and files on the UTCS machine.

Step #2 - Installing the UT VPN

Are you physically on a UTCS linux machine?
