Tuition & Fees
We know that planning for graduate school involves many important considerations. Understanding your tuition, housing and other expenses is key to making informed decisions and preparing for success. Funding and Financial Aid
Master’s Program Funding
While our master’s program does not include automatic funding, there are opportunities to support your studies. Teaching and research positions may be available, and many students secure summer internships through our Friends of Computer Science (FoCS) partners. These internships not only help offset costs but also provide valuable hands-on experience and industry connections.
Doctoral Program Funding
Most Ph.D. students receive financial support for their first five years through fellowships, graduate research assistantships (GRA) and teaching assistantships (TA), which include a stipend, health insurance and tuition support. Most students also receive dedicated workspace in the Gates-Dell Complex, one of the nation’s premier academic computer science buildings. Doctoral students in good academic standing often continue to receive funding through research or teaching positions beyond five years. We are committed to providing the resources necessary for you to focus on research and professional growth throughout the program. Funding is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance, professional performance and availability of funds.
Doctoral Fellowships
Exceptional Ph.D. applicants are automatically considered for prestigious fellowships, including the Harrington Doctoral Fellowship and the Graduate School Recruitment Fellowships. These awards allow you to focus on research, mentorship and collaboration with top-tier faculty.
Fellowship recipients receive:
- A competitive 9-month or 12- month stipend designed to support the cost of living in Austin
- Full tuition coverage through the fellowship
- Access to student medical resources, UT health services, UT hospitals and comprehensive medical insurance.
- Opportunities to receive various research and travel funding opportunities.
These fellowships recognize outstanding academic achievement and research potential. No separate application is required; our admissions committee automatically reviews eligible candidates.
Many of our current students have successfully applied for and received external fellowships from companies and organizations such as the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Google, Microsoft, Apple, IBM, NVIDIA and others. These fellowships provide varying types of support, depending on the specific funding source.
Research Assistantships
Many students begin the program with research assistantships (GRAs), but some secure these positions after their first year. Appointments are semester-based and determined by individual professors. A 20-hour-per-week GRA covers tuition, fees and insurance, with most students transitioning into research roles by their second or third year.
Teaching Assistantships
Teaching assistantships (TAs) are funded appointments available to Ph.D. students each semester. A 20-hour-per-week TA includes tuition, fees and insurance. New international TAs must complete the University’s oral English assessment or International Teaching Assistants (ITA) screening.
