According to U.S. News & World Report’s 2019 Best Graduate Schools report, UT’s computer science graduate program is among the top 10 best graduate programs for computer science in the country, as well as among the top 5 among public schools and the best in Texas.

Texas Computer Science ranks 10th out of the 188 universities included, surpassing Caltech at 11th and Harvard at 16th. The universities were scored between 1 and 5, and Texas Computer Science received a score of 4.3. The ranking for science graduate programs is based on a survey of academic leaders at peer institutions. Four “specialties,” or areas of research, at UTCS also rank in the top ten, with Theory at 7th, Programming Language and Systems both at 8th, and Artificial Intelligence tied for 8th with the University of Illinois—Urbana-Champaign.

Overall, the University of Texas at Austin has 49 graduate programs in the top 10, including a total of 12 programs in the sciences of which four are in computer science. UT Austin has the most top-ten programs among universities in Texas and third among public universities, after the University of California—Berkeley with 111 programs and the University of Michigan with 100 programs.

While U.S. News & World Report releases an annual ranking of undergraduate programs, the graduate ranking is separate, and while not every program ranking is revised each year, this year the report included new rankings for science graduate programs.
