Lorenzo Alvisi was selected for his contributions to reliable distributed systems. His research interest is in distributed computing, with a particular emphasis on issues of dependability. 

Risto Miikkulainen was selected for his contributions to neural and evolutionary computation. His main research interests are in artificial intelligence, data mining, machine learning, and natural computation, and bioinformatics and computational with a focus on biologically-inspired computation such as neural networks and evolutionary computation.
